The Bluebird Café
Artisanal cooking in an artsy section
By Laura bell
The Bluebird, in Town Center, recently opened to a packed house and already has a loyal following. The cafés hours are 7a.m. until noon Tuesday-Sunday (closed Mondays). This is not surprising as it is owned and operated by Scott and Alex Hoeksema of Big Sky, also owner/operators of the Lotus Pad another locals’ favorite eatery. Alex is from San Francisco, Calif., where she attended culinary school. Fellow Chef, Marcie Fitch, will manage the kitchen.
Bluebird Café has traditional breakfast foods; eggs and pancakes. And there are the non-traditional yummy offerings Belgian Waffles with unusual combinations such as Monkey’s Uncle, waffles with bananas, praline sauce, maple butter and fresh cream; Belgian Farmer, waffles with two eggs, Andouille sausage and maple butter.
Some of the chef’s specialties include corn bread and eggs with jalapeño jam or cheesy biscuits and comfort food: biscuits and gravy. Another stellar surprise on the menu is the prize. Everything is affordable. Good food, good service and good pricing make Bluebird Café a welcome addition to Big Sky.
In addition to great food there is some great art adorning the walls. According to Alex, anyone who wants to put their art up can. It is first come, first served.
A bright and beautiful mural by James Clark and Katie Powell greets diners when they walk in the door. “Not everybody offers you a wall to do art on,” Clark said.
The Bluebird is located at 118 Ousel Falls Rd in the Goode Place Bldg in the Town Center (former Huckleberry Café location). For more information on The Bluebird Café, please call: 995-3275.
